Costumes are important part of many traditional occasions such as Halloween and Christmas. During these seasons however, the prices of costumes seem to rocket sky high. So, before you spend a huge chunk of your budget on costumes perhaps you should first consider making one yourself.

The good thing about homemade costumes is that you can use materials found in your home. You can create almost any kind of costume you fancy. They are very easy to make and they are practically free!

Here's a great example of homemade Halloween costume:

Butterfly Costume

To make a Halloween butterfly costume you will need several materials:

For the wings:

  • 2 large cardboard sheets
  • paint colors
  • paint brush
  • glitters
  • glue
  • stapler

Start by making butterfly wings. Draw a wing on the cardboard sheet. Cut out the wings and then outline it with a marker. Add colors to your wings by painting it. You can use unique or different patterns by using a variety of colors. Sprinkle some glitters to give your wings that wonderful sparkle.

Leave the wings for a couple of hours or until it is dry.

Once it is dry, staple the wings to your green dress.

For the flower crown:

  • plastic flowers
  • plastic leaves
  • wire
  • stapler
  • glitter

Add flair to your costume by wearing a flower crown. Bend the wire to create a circle. Make sure that the circle is large enough to fit your head.

Using a stapler, attach leaves and flowers onto the wire. You can use different colors of flowers and leaves to make the crown more colorful. Sprinkle the crown with glitters.
